This is naturally how soccer positions are chosen all over the world. If you have the skills for a position, you will probably get to play that position.
What if you want to play another position that you are not so strong at?
Here is my advice. As with any job, find out what skills you need to do that job and then acquire those skills. It should make sense that once you have these skills, you at least have a good start at performing in that position.

To help you, I have broken each position down into their basic skill sets. From here, you can decide which positions that you can perform at well now and which skills you will need to get, to play better at your current position or a different one.
Position: Forward requires you to be good at these skill sets: Striking (shooting), turning, dribbling, trapping/receiving, heading.
